Inferring the Energy and Distance Distributions of Fast Radio Bursts Using the First CHIME/FRB Catalog

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are brief, energetic, extragalactic flashes of emission whose progenitors largely unknown. Although studying the FRB population is essential for understanding how these astrophysical phenomena occur, such studies have been difficult to conduct without large numbers FRBs and characterizable observational biases. Using recently released catalog 536 published by Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment/Fast Radio Burst (CHIME/FRB) collaboration, we present a study that also calibrates selection effects. Assuming Schechter luminosity function, infer characteristic energy cut-off $E_\mathrm{char} =$ $2.38^{+5.35}_{-1.64} \times 10^{41}$ erg differential power-law index $\gamma $-1.3^{+0.7}_{-0.4}$. Simultaneously, volumetric rate [$7.3^{+8.8}_{-3.8}$(stat.)$^{+2.0}_{-1.8}$(sys.)]$\times 10^4$ Gpc$^{-3}$ year$^{-1}$ above pivot 10$^{39}$ below scattering timescale 10 ms at 600 MHz, find cannot significantly constrain cosmic evolution with star formation rate. Modeling host dispersion measure (DM) contribution as log-normal distribution assuming total Galactic 80 pc cm$^{-3}$, median value $\mathrm{DM}_\mathrm{host} $84^{+69}_{-49}$ comparable values typically used in literature. Proposed models should be consistent energetics abundances full predicted our results. Finally, redshift detected CHIME, which will tested localizations redshifts enabled upcoming CHIME/FRB Outriggers project.
